Korean-Style Texture Perm! - How long should your hair be for the best results?

2024-09-10|Lena

Many men choose to get a perm for several reasons: to achieve a hairstyle that’s easy to manage, to add volume and texture to fine or flat hair, to stay on-trend, or to enhance their face shape. While some men might not have a strong sense of style, simply understanding their own priorities for a hairstyle can make it easy to choose the right look. In recent years, Korean-style perms have gained popularity not only in the women’s market but also in the men's world. Compared to the classic clean-cut short styles, the "Korean-style texture perm" has become one of the most requested looks for men. In this article, XUAN, a hairstylist at Keelung Days Salon, will guide you through understanding the Korean-style texture perm and why it's such a sought-after option.

Recommended men’s perm: What is a Korean-Style Texture Perm?

There are two main types of men's perms: "hot perm" and "cold perm." The Korean-style texture perm is a representative of the hot perm, while the cold perm follows more traditional methods. The term "texture" refers to the flow and pattern created by the hair's natural direction, starting from the roots and forming larger waves. The curls appear more natural, similar to the soft waves seen in Korean-style perms for women. The process typically takes 2-3 hours, depending on the individual's hair type and condition. On the other hand, cold perms don’t involve heat; the perm solution is applied directly to the hair. Hairstylist XUAN explains that this technique creates more pronounced and defined waves.

How long should your hair be for a texture perm?

Getting a texture perm allows for various styling options with bangs. Therefore, XUAN recommends that men's bangs should at least reach the eye level, and the top of the hair should extend to the ears. This is because the hair will shrink upward after the perm, and having enough length is key to achieving well-defined texture. Whether you have coarse or fine hair, this hairstyle works well for many men. XUAN particularly recommends the texture perm for those with fine or thin hair, as it adds volume and helps create a fuller look by addressing flatness at the crown. For those with overly thick hair, the texture perm also provides a great solution, reducing the heavy appearance by adding volume and movement.

Variations of bangs in a texture perm

The texture perm is a versatile hairstyle that suits all face shapes, whether round, long, or square, which is why it remains a popular choice among men. Although it works well for most, special attention should be paid when choosing the right bangs, as the correct choice can enhance facial features, while the wrong one may detract from the overall look. The texture perm allows for various bang styles, such as the classic middle part or the trendy comma bangs seen on Ahn Hyo-seop, the lead actor in the Korean drama <Business Proposal>. For men looking to try a bolder style, Jackson Wang's slicked-back bangs are a great option. XUAN suggests that the middle part works best for men with shorter faces, as exposing the forehead helps elongate the overall proportions. On the other hand, for those with longer facial proportions, a middle part may exaggerate the length, making the face appear even longer.

How to style a Korean-Style Texture Perm?

For men getting a texture perm, it requires maintenance, and XUAN advises, "Texture perms must be cared for with mousse." Styling can vary depending on your preferred look, and using different blow-dryer attachments can help achieve the desired effect.

Natural look:

For a casual, everyday look, you’ll need mousse as a base styling product and a regular blow-dryer. Apply a small amount of styling product to damp hair, and while blow-drying, use your fingers to scrunch the curls. This method results in a more natural wave.

Styled look:

If you’re heading out for a special occasion and want a more defined look, in addition to mousse, use a diffuser to dry the hair. This method enhances the curl texture, making it appear more structured and three-dimensional.

XUAN emphasizes the importance of mousse, stating that the texture will look more defined and attractive with it. Without mousse, the waves will not be as visible. He also shared a tip to avoid frizzy hair: "Blow in the direction of the hair, towards the front. If you blow in random directions or against the hair’s natural flow, it can lead to frizz." For men commuting with helmets, don't worry! After taking off your helmet, simply give your hair a quick fix with your hands, and you’re good to go, which is why men love this easy-to-manage style. Steps for post-perm styling:

  1. Apply mousse to damp hair.
  2. Use the blow-dryer at an angle that follows the hair’s natural direction. While blow-drying, use your hands to twist the hair at the roots. Start with a lower blow-dryer speed.
  3. After drying, apply a small amount of hair oil to your hands and use it to define the front and add volume and texture to the top.

Getting a perm can make you look more energetic and polished. For men whose sideburns tend to stick out, in addition to a texture perm, XUAN suggests a flat perm. If you don’t want a full perm, you can opt to only perm the sideburns to prevent them from sticking out as they grow.
