Yunlin Douliu hair salon recommendation
Most people assume Yunlin is home only to traditional family barbershops, but a visit to Meido Hair Salon quickly shatters that stereotype. Even on a weekday morning, Meido is bustling, a testament to its local popularity. The salon’s interior design and the stylists’ online portfolios reflect a commitment to evolving with trends despite its 71-year history. Meido’s six stylists have been serving here for 10 to 30 years, offering expertise in everything from unique hair dyeing and partial highlights to women’s and men’s perms, ensuring every client finds the right stylist for their needs.
Meido Hair Salon remains busy even on weekdays.
Building a beautiful city together
Meido Hair Salon was co-founded by the current second-generation owner, Sister Chang’s aunt (Teacher Li), and her mother. Sister Chang recalls their humble beginnings when her mother, unable to complete junior high school due to financial hardship, encouraged her younger siblings to prioritize education. Teacher Li, a graduate of Huwei Girls’ High School, had the opportunity to pursue a teaching career but chose a different path. Having experienced tough times, she decided to start her own business. At just 17, she traveled to Tainan to learn a trade, planting the seeds for what would become Meido Hair Salon.

The name "Meido" carries a straightforward yet profound meaning: a hope to create a beautiful city in the once barren Yunlin. The first-generation founder, Teacher Li, now 90 years old, occasionally visits the salon to cut hair for clients. With steady hands and unwavering focus, her dedication reflects a lifelong commitment to the craft and the spirit of a true hairdressing professional.

From resistance to taking over: the second generation continues the dream
Growing up in a hairdressing environment, Sister Chang always believed it was a profession that left little room for family life. In its early days, Meido was renowned for bridal styling in the Douliu area, at its peak handling up to 50 brides in a single day. The family dedicated their entire day to clients, naturally reducing the time spent with their children. As a result, the phrase "I’d rather do anything but hairdressing" became deeply ingrained in Sister Chang’s mind from a young age.

At the peak of its success, Meido Hair Salon faced significant staff changes, leading to a rapid decline in business. While studying chemical engineering in Taipei, Sister Chang received a life-changing message from her mother: "Do you want to take over Meido? If you’re willing, I’ll keep it going. If not, I’ll shut it down and transfer the staff to your cousin’s salon." This prompted Sister Chang to make the bold decision to pause her studies and fully commit to the family business. With no prior experience in hairdressing, she trained in Japan before returning to take the reins at Meido.
The key to over 60 years of stability
Meido Hair Salon has always upheld the philosophy of genuine care and building trust with clients. After taking over, Sister Chang infused the business with a new vision, creating more growth opportunities. As a result, the salon has seen a steady increase in revenue, driven by the loyalty of returning customers and the influx of new ones. Its stellar reputation spreads through word of mouth, with some stylists even having the privilege of serving three generations of the same family.
Many senior stylists at Meido have been serving clients since their youth and continue to do so to this day.
Sister Chang emphasizes that a client entrusting their hair to a stylist is built on a foundation of trust. Damaged hair can take up to three months to repair, so she frequently reminds Meido’s team of the importance of this trust: “We must cherish this. It’s not just about money—when someone trusts us, we must not let them down.” As competition in the hairdressing industry continues to grow, trust remains crucial, but it’s no longer enough. From the moment a client enters to the time they leave, every detail of their experience matters. Proactively enhancing customer experience has become the key to sustainable success in today’s market.

Future goals: training more hairdressing talents
To remain timeless, Meido Hair Salon must adapt to the changing times, as trends in the beauty industry evolve rapidly. Sister Chang, who sees the brand's hallmark as "harmony" and "habit," explains that while treating customers with genuine warmth fosters loyalty, the salon risks losing clients who enjoy trying new things if it doesn’t innovate. “You can’t assume your customers will always stay loyal. Offer them something fresh before they feel the need for change,” she advises.

After taking over, the second-generation leadership faced new challenges from the market. For Sister Chang, Mido's team embodies the salon's identity—steady and reliable but with limited innovation. Exuding the aura of a leader, she remarked, “A big umbrella offers great protection, but under it, you can’t see the sun and naturally lose the ability to shield yourself from it. That’s why I’ll now encourage everyone to step out, strengthening their individual styles.” This "umbrella" has also extended its reach to nearby vocational colleges, where Meido shares industry expertise with students, actively fostering the next generation of talented hair professionals.
